Cultivating a Thriving Planet

Our Commitment: Contribute to creating a healthier planet for future generations.
Our Approach: Deliver a more sustainable approach to our operations and value chain through a focus on climate action, natural resource stewardship and responsible sourcing & packaging.

BRINGING OUR PROMISE TO LIFE

Environmental stewardship has always been a part of our heritage, and today is a key consideration in virtually every aspect of our operations.

To help us deliver on our commitment to support a healthier planet, we have evaluated the evolution of our business while taking into account the changes in our operating environment and the potential for further developments.

This work has informed our Environmental Policy and evolved environmental impact objectives, which focus our initiatives on the areas in which we believe we can make the most meaningful impact.

A Commitment to Responsible Packaging(1)

Our packaging sustainability goals aim to reduce the environmental impact of our packaging, while maintaining the quality of our products. These goals are based on the following three principles: Support Recycling, Source Sustainably, and Optimize Design.

Packaging must meet the requirements of Compliance, Performance, and Consumer Preference. Action plans to support our ability to balance these responsibilities target data collection, portfolio review, packaging supplier engagement, and industry collaboration.

Our Responsible Packaging goals are as follows:

  • Maintain greater than 85% of retail packaging as recyclable
  • Provide recycling instructions for greater than 90% of retail packaging by 2030
  • Strive to incorporate an average 30% of post-consumer recycled content in rigid plastic containers by 2030

A Commitment to Efficient Operations

We are committed to advancing our journey toward zero waste by achieving TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) certification. This goal formalizes our auditing, record-keeping, and training processes, ensuring a consistent and sustainable approach across all manufacturing facilities. Through TRUE, we will measure our performance, uncover new opportunities for improvement, and institutionalize practices that reduce, reuse, and recycle waste. By building on our momentum and sharing learnings across the organization, we reaffirm our dedication to maximizing resource efficiency and minimizing environmental impact.

Since 2020, we have proactively worked to transition to cleaner energy by directly supporting the development and operation of meaningful renewable power projects. Our partnership with Ørsted in two utility‑scale wind farms represents 122 MW of renewable energy, an amount expected to match 100% of the grid electricity used across our company‑owned facilities on an annual basis.3 This renewable energy has already significantly reduced our greenhouse gas emissions and supports progress beyond our Scope 1 and 2 reduction goals. These actions demonstrate our commitment to responsible growth and the long‑term well‑being of the environment.

Improving energy and water efficiency at our manufacturing sites is essential to our commitment to responsible resource management and long-term sustainability. Building on the tremendous progress our facilities have already made, we will continue to enhance how we view and manage energy and water usage through innovation, technological investments, and operational improvements. Our new 2030 goal reflects our dedication to reducing environmental impact while driving efficiency and resilience across our operations.

To strengthen our response to climate action, we established science-based targets for our GHG emission goals. These goals were developed using the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) protocol and were approved in 2021. The adoption of science-based targets reflects our commitment to leveraging established standards to guide our strategy to support long-term resiliency.

Our Efficient Operations goals are as follows:

  • 100% of Company-owned manufacturing sites(2) achieve TRUE certification by 2030
  • 100% renewable electricity match(3)
  • 100% of Company-owned manufacturing sites improving energy and water efficiency by 2030 from a 2024 base-year
  • Reduce Scope 1 & 2 GHG emissions by 28% by 2030 from a 2019 base-year(4) (absolute reduction)

A Commitment to a Sustainable Supply Chain

As an organization committed to supporting a healthier planet for all future generations, it is important that we seek opportunities to drive continuous improvement beyond our four walls. We have established goals to maintain progress in areas relevant to both our business and the world in which we operate.

To deliver on these goals, we will continue to pursue mitigation and adaptation with a focus on innovating our processes, working with our suppliers, and engaging peers in our industry to enact change that will have benefits beyond our own Company.

Our Sustainable Supply Chain goals are as follows:

  • Reduce Scope 3 GHG emissions by 22% per unit of sold product by 2030 from a 2019 base-year (intensity reduction)(5)
  • 100% of direct purchases are cage-free eggs in all products by 2027
  • 100% of direct purchases of palm oil certified by RSPO

(1) Subject to the evolution of applicable state packaging laws.
(2) Company-owned manufacturing sites as of January 2025, excluding any divestitures and future acquisitions.
(3) Calendar year basis across current Company-owned sites.
(4) The SBTi target boundary includes biogenic emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks. In accordance with the GHG Protocol, biogenic emissions are reported separately from the Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions
(5) The approved Science-Based Target scope includes emissions related to purchased direct materials (Category 1) and end-of-life treatment of sold products (Category 12).

ingredients seafood

Seafood

Seafood is part of the supply chain in our pet food and pet snacks business. Unfortunately, in recent years, there have been reports about the use of forced labor through the practice of transshipping in certain areas of the world – transshipping involves the movement of fish from one ship to another at sea. We require all our suppliers to provide us with appropriate legal documentation to validate they are not sourcing their seafood in this unethical manner.

Seafood Task Force

Issues Addressed

Human Rights
Supply Chain Transparency

Notable Results

Zero-tolerance policy for illegal transshipments at sea and strictly ban the practice throughout our supply chain

ingredients palm oil

Palm Oil

Palm oil is a versatile stabilizing ingredient found in a range of products across our business, from peanut butter to ice cream toppings and sweet baked snacks.

Due to the social and environmental risks involved in the palm oil supply chain, we are committed to continued monitoring of our own supply chain.  For additional details on our sustainable palm oil commitment, click here

Notable Results

As of December 31, 2022, we achieved our goal to source 100% of our direct purchases of shell eggs, liquid eggs and egg ingredients from cage-free hens for our pet food & snacks and frozen handhelds & spreads categories.

We have extended our commitment to source 100% of our direct purchases of shell eggs, liquid eggs and egg ingredients from cage-free hens for our recently acquired sweet baked snacks business by the end of 2027. To help support continued progress on this commitment, we have established an interim goal to convert 50% of our direct purchases by 2026. As of 2025, we have established a transition agreement with one of our suppliers to source 50% cage-free eggs by October 2026.

We also indirectly purchase a small quantity of eggs that are (i) in finished products produced for us by contract manufacturing partners or (ii) included as an ingredient of an ingredient we purchase.  We are currently exploring options for converting our indirect egg supply to cage-free.
